Peter’s estate planning practice focuses on all phases of implementing an estate plan, from developing estate planning vehicles tailored to each client’s needs to collaborating with financial institutions and advisors to accomplish each client’s particular goals. In addition to preparation of core estate planning instruments including wills, revocable trusts, and incapacitation documents, Peter regularly designs estate plans that utilize more complex tools such as irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs), grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), qualified personal residence trusts (QPRTs), sales to grantor trusts and Crummey gift trusts. Peter also advises clients with respect to premarital arrangements, providing comprehensive insight about the practical, tax, and legal implications of such agreements.
Peter gives advice to family owned businesses including structuring arrangements to transfer interests to succeeding generations in a tax efficient manner. He has significant experience in the establishment and administration of family partnerships, subchapter S corporations, limited liability companies, and private charitable foundations. Peter also has extensive knowledge of foreign tax issues affecting both U.S. and non-U.S. individuals. In addition, Peter counsels his clients on tax issues related to financial and retirement planning, including how to most effectively distribute and manage taxable assets.
In connection with his tax and private client practices, Peter oversees the preparation of income tax returns for individuals, trusts, estates, corporations and partnerships, gift tax returns, estate tax returns, and private foundation returns. Having worked as a tax attorney for over 40 years, Peter has a thorough understanding of the complexities of practicing before the Internal Revenue Service and other government entities, allowing him to effectively advocate on behalf of his clients in negotiations with these institutions.
Peter also works closely with his clients to finalize financial and other affairs upon the death of a family member. He handles all aspects of probate court filings and proceedings, such as appointment of a personal representative or administrator for the estate, preparation of inventories and accountings of estate assets, and handling transfers of real estate and other assets to the appropriate individuals or institutions. He also advises clients who serve as personal representative of an estate or as trustee of a trust regarding their fiduciary duties, giving them practical advice and assistance in the performance of their varied responsibilities. If desired by the client, Peter serves as a professional trustee or personal representative to facilitate efficient administration of the trust or estate.
Peter serves as a Director for the non-profit organization, Golf for All, a program that is dedicated to providing accessible golf programs for people with physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges. He is a past Director of the Boston Estate Planning Council and has spoken on numerous occasions on estate planning and income tax topics. He is a past instructor at the Insurance Institute, Northeastern University on Estate Planning and Accounting and Business Valuation, and is a chartered life underwriter (CLU). He has been recognized as a Massachusetts and New England Super Lawyer and is AV® Preeminent™ rated by the Martindale-Hubbell legal directory.
